Search Engine Marketing (SEM) is a form of internet marketing. the process of gaining traffic by purchasing ads on search engines. It is also called paid search and sometimes referred to as PPC (pay-per-click) or CPC (cost-per-click) marketing, that involves the promotion of websites by increasing their visibility in search engine results pages (SERPs) through optimization and advertising.
The largest SEM vendors were Google AdWords and Bing Ads (Yahoo! Search Marketing and Microsoft adCenter combined.) SEM was growing much faster than traditional advertising and even other channels of online marketing.
Successful search engine advertising campaigns depend on five main factors:
- Keyword selection
- Bid price
- Ad copy
- Ad distribution
- Effective landing pages
